My people (Hebrews 8:10 AMPC).
Why is this so important to understand?
Being stuck in an addiction or recovery for many years often results in our hearts becoming hardened … especially to believing that we will ever be set free from this lifestyle. After just a few relapses, we give up on ever being able to change our circumstances or rebuild broken relationships … but, more importantly, we give up on ourselves.
We can put on a good face when around others, yet be dying on the inside because no one really sees the ugliness and hopelessness inside our heart.
I went through my ten-year struggle of relapses back to using pain pills, even while a Christian. Yes, I used the addiction to escape negative things in my life … initially the rejection I felt from my parents growing up.
However, once I resolved those underlying negative emotions, my addiction didn’t cease permanently. I continued to escape … because life was boring!
I continued to struggle with how to step out of my mindset of “recovery” and into a new mindset of “building an awesome future!”
I wondered, was there ever going to be a time that I would not be focused on recovery?
Four years into my ten-year relapse cycle I knew God had called me to open my own Christian-based hotline, but I just didn’t know when or where that would happen.
Then it happened …
The doors finally opened for me to get training on how to open a hotline, plus I had recently moved to a large city which would provide the opportunities to find people to train and operate the hotline.
Within 3-4 months of starting that journey, my whole life turned around!
I never went back to my addiction again … because that desire was taken away when I focused on:
Using the gifts and calling God had given me to reach out to love and serve others!
This is God’s way of changing us … from the inside-out.
My heart had shifted from focusing on me, myself and I … to focusing more on loving and helping others.
This had to be a heart shift – rather than an intellectual one.
A shift I would never have picked up on until I went through the process.
It wasn’t an easy shift, because I had to rely upon God to help me navigate the many new ways of action taking while learning to recognize God’s leading, versus my intellectual knowledge and prideful attitude of I can do this myself!
The thing about heart transformation is that it requires intentional spiritual input, resulting in wisdom and insights … not intellectual change only.
I can read books (I have a library of probably 1,000 books) … but the ONLY book that is ALIVE and speaks directly to my heart and soul is the Bible. Its impact may not be instant, because we are planting seeds in our hearts. Seeds take time to grow and mature. But they can produce peace and hope in my heart while they take the time to properly grow.
Since early 1990 I have been set permanently free from my addiction. Over the years I put together a Biblical Roadmap to Freedom For a Higher Purpose blueprint to be used for any problem a person is stuck in.
